I was in Portland for about 13 nights and had take out from Al Thai on four different occasions during my stay...that should tell how much I enjoyed both the food and the somewhat quirky staff and atmosphere of the restaurant. My go-to dish was Pad Thai with chicken, which I had on three nights for dinner, as well as the beef drunken noodles once. The Pad Thai was perfect, I ordered it medium spicy, which was definitely on the spicier side, as it would make my nose water a bit (I think it was great for clearing my sinuses after a day at the grain terminal). Contrary to some other reviews, the Pad Thai had a suitable amount of chicken in it.
The owner was also lovely and her enthusiasm was infectious. Anyway, I highly recommend this hole in the wall! -

If you admire tradicional home cooking this is a place you do not want to miss. Starting from the owner and cook, she is wonderful and her food is spectacular. Thank you Al for for the yummy food it was a pleasure tasting your recipes.

The owner (I think?) served us and she was so polite and sweet. Their Pad Thai was made to perfection but I must highlight their Tea.. so yummy! Very smooth and perfectly sweet. If I could, I would've drank it all in one go.

I have mixed feelings about "hole in the wall" restaurants. Sometimes, taste-wise, they really impress. But they also don't seem like the cleanest of places and for a germaphobe-ish person like me, I have to really look the other way. For some good eats, though, I will usually give a pass on how well-kept it is.
Unfortunately, the pad see ew (which is what I try at every Thai restaurant) did not leave a good impression. And with that being mediocre, it doesn't make a good case for a very high rating overall. The first thing that strikes you as you enter is the strong smell of incense. Shouldn't the first thing be the aroma of flavorful food? -

Maybe the worst Thai food I've had in Portland, sadly. We ordered and the lady at the counter was nice but there were some bugs on the table so we just sat outside. We had Pad Thai and Red curry. Pad Thai was 99% noodles with literally two pieces of green onion. Red curry was not spicy at all and very watered down. Two stars instead of one because the peanut sauce that came with our fresh rolls was really good and the portions were actually super huge ...but... the rest of Portland has way better Thai food offerings.
